After some prodding, I finally made a bevel-up jack.  Made shavings with it today... and, holy smokes, I think this is a keeper.

No, no, no, that design is obviously flawed, quite dangerous to use, can cause mortal injury to the operator. For the sake of humanity and for the safety of untold generations of users, you must immediately send it to me for proper disposal. :-)
