Boring large diameter holes - TomFromStLouis - 06-16-2017

My auger bit set only goes up to 1" and I want some 4-6" deep holes approximately 1.5" in diameter. Drilling in cherry fwiw and open to suggestions

Can you go one side and flip second?  If so, Forstners from your local Borg is all you need.  Quick search should turn up a half-dozen places if you need long shafts.

Lots of work by hand, so hope you can use the DP.

These will not be through holes

Have an old adj auger bit that will go that large, but if I had a lot to do I'd probably use a Forstner bit....

Answer is either a shank extender or the specially long bit.

Buy and adjustable auger and stock up on a honkin lot of elbow grease.

I only have 3 of these to drill so I hope to have enough elbow grease in house. I take it wood auger buts don't come in anything bigger than 1" so I gotta go with an adjustable?

There are  lots of choices. Google is your friend for finding anything.  Here are just 3 results.

Whatever bit you use, if you're doing it by hand, be prepared to sweat a lot.  Maybe even cuss some.

RE: Boring large diameter holes - Laid-Back - 06-17-2017

If this is going to be done by hand I'd search out an auger bit as mentioned above. From my experience the adjustable bits and forstners will wonder a to one degree or another not leaving a parallel hole at that depth unless the workpiece is secured in a drill press.

Regardless of which route you take let us know how it works out.
