RE: Stick out like a... - hbmcc - 08-01-2017 This is looking very nice. No trouble with planing curly grain? RE: Stick out like a... - bandit571 - 08-01-2017 No trouble at all.....well, maybe the Wards 78.....it might need to be sharpened....sometime [attachment=3477] Got the rest of the panels raised....bench has been cleared [attachment=3478] Hey, it was Lunchtime....Stiles are being set up for mortises to be chopped.. Soo, where did the rest of the parts go? [attachment=3479] Try adjusting all them clamps..with a busted thumb....Side #1 is now glued up. Might try to get everything ready for Side #2's glue up, tomorrow? Stay tuned RE: Sticks out like a... - bandit571 - 08-01-2017 Went back to the shop for a bit....chopped a few mortises....7 out of 10 are done, and dry fitted.. [attachment=3482] This is a haunched tenon... [attachment=3483] Fills the groove on the end of the stile... Dry fits... [attachment=3484] This one showed a problem happening...that be a crack at the top of the stile, on the "show" side Elmers and a couple c clamps to glue the wayward part back into place. Chopped the mortises with just a few tools, nothing fancy.. [attachment=3485] Maybe tomorrow, I can get the last three mortises chopped out and dry fitted? Kind of dreading the glue up , not enough "Good Hands" Stay tuned.. RE: Sticks out like a... - bandit571 - 08-02-2017 Got the 1 x 2s to the shop this morning....chopped the LAST three mortises, and did the dry fits Then, the "FUN" began.... Added a third pipe clamp, right at the center, plus one on each end. Could not use the vises to help hold things...somehow got everything glued and clamped up.. [attachment=3495] Added a couple "F" style clamps as well....set it out of the way for now.....I thought.. [attachment=3496] Until you look behind these two sides....I need to use that mitre box, and those 1 x 2s standing up back there.. Well, I could do a little measuring, decide what width the case will be...and allow the glue to dry Less work watching glue dry, anyway. When I can move those two sides out of the way...I might get a bit more done...I do have a "spare" Mitre Box Might just use it. Stay tuned RE: Stick out like a... - bandit571 - 08-03-2017 used a mitre box to cut a few parts.. [attachment=3517] Long parts.. [attachment=3518] And not so long parts.. [attachment=3519] Reset the saw and the bandsaw to cut a few tenons. [attachment=3520] Even set up a jig on the bench, to chop a few mortises with.. [attachment=3521] Stay tuned to see what all this is for.... RE: Stick out like a... - bandit571 - 08-03-2017 Ok, first thing this morning, I removed the clamps from Side#2.....might have other uses for them... That mortise jig? I have a three piece jig I can attach to the top of the bench.... [attachment=3522] Look closely, you will see a pair of Visegrips Finger clamps. I use those to hold the part in the jig.....makes it easy to move to the next spot and reclamp. The backsaw? I make a cut along each side of the "open end" mortise, at an angle. A mallet and chisel to chop down into the far end, then pop out the waste....after a bit, I try a dry fit.. [attachment=3523] Looks good from my seat.. I then do the other end the same way. On this frame, I needed a center piece...so I also needed to chop a hole for it's tenons.. [attachment=3524] USED to be a knot in there, too ....Chopped the matching mortises in the other rail....spread some Elmer's around, and used a few clamps [attachment=3525] Ah...this is the frame two drawers will ride on. Guide in the middle to keep them in line. There will be a drawer below this web-frame, so.. [attachment=3526] A kicker was added to keep that drawer from tipping down when you open it. Not too bad a three hour day? Maybe tomorrow I can get the other four web-frames made? Then I can think about assembling the case? Stay tuned.. RE: Stick out like a... - Arch_E - 08-03-2017 Great work, especially given your smashed thumb. Inspiring to see what you're doing with such a fragile digit. RE: Stick out like a... - bandit571 - 08-04-2017 Starting to get some use out of it, again.... [attachment=3541] The way I have been chopping these mortises... [attachment=3542] After laying out what size and where it goes, I use this little saw at an angle. Then, [attachment=3543] I dig a hole at the far end... [attachment=3544] I come in with the same chisel from the sawn end, and pop the waste out....a bit of clean up, and a dry fit. [attachment=3545] Do the other three corners the same way, add a bit of glue, a couple clamps. Then add a kicker. Set aside until the glue dries. Got two more web-frames done today....ran out of those clamps, so I'll have to wait to do the last two frames... Stay tuned ( Aug 15, I get the thumb rechecked....we'll see how it goes..) RE: Stick out like a... - bandit571 - 08-05-2017 Just the highlights from to day... [attachment=3557] Last of the webframes were made.. [attachment=3558] Both sides were matched up. Plane to smooth of a few saw marks... [attachment=3559] Rebates were cut for the plywood back panel. Web-frames were installed.. [attachment=3560] Finally set the case on it's own four feet.. [attachment=3561] Then started on some Black Walnut trim pieces.....5 hours or so, in the shop.. Stay tuned.... RE: Stick out like a... - bandit571 - 08-07-2017 Cut some rails out of Walnut, and added a dovetail on the ends.. [attachment=3619] Ganged up three, and jointed the edges to match.. [attachment=3622] Set the case up where I could do a bit of work( on a Monday? ) [attachment=3625] Case is getting to be a bit heavy.. Needed up there so I could mark and chop dovetail "sockets" [attachment=3626] Got to about here....marked out for one more rail.. [attachment=3627] And called it quits for the day. Was fighting things the entire way.. Maybe tomorrow, being Tuesday, I might have better luck? Stay tuned.. |
