A project in Maple - bandit571 - 09-19-2017

Had quite a bit of Maple "leftovers"  from the last couple of builds...
[attachment=4541]
And a glued up panel..
[attachment=4542]
Decided to make a "Blanket  Chest" out of the pile..
[attachment=4543]
Ripped a few down to make a few stiles and rails...
[attachment=4544]
Glued a few other boards up into two panels.  I could then cut into two blanks per panel, to make a few raised panels
[attachment=4545]
To go with the frame parts.
Stay tuned....front of the chest was worked on today.....wasn't "pretty" but....
Uhoh

RE: A project in Maple - bandit571 - 09-20-2017

Dry fit #1
Rolleyes
[attachment=4550]
trying to get the top and bottom rails fitted....
[attachment=4551]
Mitresaw to do a few shoulder cuts.....cheek cuts were done on the bandsaw..
Rolleyes
[attachment=4552]
Stanley#45 to plough a groove or two..then chop a mortise or two..
[attachment=4553]
Did a few of these dry fits....and found out the panels were not quite right...1/8" off in length and width, and a touch out of square.  Photo is after correcting that issue, and re-doing the raised panel bevels..
Upset
[attachment=4554]
Until the grooves would fit, again.

Maybe today, I can get a few things done?
Confused Hope to spread a bit of glue around,too...we'll see.
Stay tuned

RE: A project in Maple - bandit571 - 09-20-2017

Chopped a few mortises, and made a few glue ups today..
[attachment=4555]
Had to use the end vise as an extra set of hands...
Rolleyes
[attachment=4556]
made a few more grooves, with a large plough plane
Raised
[attachment=4557]
Had to flatten a couple panels, after they had been trimmed to size
[attachment=4558]
On the large glue up, I added pins to hold things better..
[attachment=4559]
Back started hurting,  after just 3 hours in the shop, again.   Had a little better luck, today
Winkgrin

Need to haul a board down to the shop...tomorrow
No   Maybe I can get  the rest of the case's sides done
Confused
Stay tuned

Not boring!   Afraid most of us can't keep up with your speed.   Nice projects I must say.

I think three hours in the shop is just about right for a session.

You don't put any finish on those panels before framing them?

RE: A project in Maple - Tynyyn - 09-25-2017

I hate your guts.
Big Grin   Only because you have more motivation than me.
Sleep  Good job on the build.  Maybe you need to open a youtube channel and video your builds?

RE: A project in Maple - bandit571 - 09-25-2017

Pre finish a panel?
Confused   Never have, never will....

Pine floor boards,  blanket chest is over 20 year old.
Cool
[attachment=4625]
Still going strong

RE: A project in Maple - bandit571 - 09-25-2017

Work on the ends....
[attachment=4627]
panel was raised..
[attachment=4628]
Stiles cut to length and width.    A foot profile was made to match the existing ones...
Used these to determine the sizes of the rails....length and width...
[attachment=4629]
Set a jig or two, for the Stanley No.45 to mill a bunch of grooves, to house the panel..
[attachment=4630]
And cut a few tenons...
[attachment=4631]
That backsaw had other chores to do.   Shoulder cuts were done on the Langdon Mitre Box....cheek cuts were via the bandsaw.

Came back after Supper, chopped a few mortises,  and did the glue up.  Let that sit for the day...

Need to raise the other panel,  cut a few tenons, and chop a few more mortises.   Maybe Wed.  I can have the last end panel glued up?

Then some assembly....we'll see how things go,  stay tuned
