What is this thing? - Bevel gauge/square - Strokes77 - 11-18-2017
Found this little contraption the other day. Haven't seen anything like it before, what is it?
The blade is 12" long. The only marking says "Model Pat US Feb 13 17" There is a dial with angles on it I noticed you can't see it on the pictures, but it's there.. You can lock it down at a certain angle, and then you can use it as a bevel gauge to mark your wood.
It locks down fairly securely with the thumb screw, but it is not accurate any longer.
Anybody seen something like this?

I've never seen that one, but the early 20th century saw a lot of variations of the "one tool to do lots of things." They're still made; I've got a "squangle" that uses a slightly different approach to offering a try square and a bevel gauge all in one. I never use it. Really, I should put it in the "going to Habitat ReStore" box.
Yours is, anyway, more attractive than my "squangle."

Apparently they solve problems that were common at the time.

Some of those inspirations proved truly useful and survived; others became interesting things people find at junk shops.

It's missing the spirit level. I was wondering what was supposed to be there on that bracket...
And wait a minute... the drawing says you can move the head along the stock... I didn't know that, gonna have to go try and see if it moves...
