Holding small tenons - Bill Mains - 11-25-2017

Making ornaments with small urchin shells. Want to turn tenon first n drill small hole then reverse it to hold the tenon to finish turning the finial. Pin jaws too large and don't want to buy anything. Thought I saw where someone made a type of compression chuck out of wood to hold small tenon~ any suggestions?

Unless can make you own collet chuck, out of wood. Ernie Conover showed how in his “TheLathe Book.” May find latest edition on line in PDF format. Check out page 53 cross between jam and collet chucks 1st link.

If cannot make your own need to spend some money. Couple different brands out there and of course can find them on E-bay. When buying there are couple different # collects just make sure buy the ones for your chuck.

Whether make your own or buy a chuck will have to figure out waste end to fit the chuck so can reverse turn.

The way I make mine is to make a small collar with a hole in the center.Fit it to the hole in the urchin and then turn a finial to fit in the collar.Make the same for top and bottom.

Look at Pinterest. Tons of turning info and I saw someone making their own collets. You’re bound to find something useful.

How small are these tenons?  I've made countless urchin ornaments with pin jaws.  If I had to go smaller for some reason, I'd either use the drill chuck or enlarge the urchin hole.  You can use a mortising jig sharpening cone in the drill press to gently enlarge the hole.

I didn't make e the chuck in that picture. I pulled that off the internet. It's looks like it might be plastic but I have seen some made of wood. See attached pic.
Pretty simple ; drill a hole about the size of the blank and then cut an X as a relief kerf that will allow the clamp to compress the Jaws
