Recommendations for a new outboard chuck please... - Gregory of Sherwood Forest - 12-06-2018

I need a new chuck to use on the outboard end of the headstock for my lathe. It uses 1 1/8" - 8 thread ( yes, I'm sure), and I'd like it to be a locking chuck as I do reverse direction occasionally. I don't mind having to use an adapter, if necessary, as long as it'll lock also. be
Preferably with interchangeable jaws.

I know several of you have your favorites, so hit me with your suggestions.

Thanks in advance...

My go to chuck is my big vicmarc. They are spendy and will fit your lathe. second would be a nova but they don't fit your lathe. The Record will fit your lathe and looks like a direct copy of the SN2 and even accepts nova jaws.
Vicmarc
Record
Both should have the setscrews to lock them down for reverse turning.

I would recommend the Vicmarc VM120. Their list of inserts includes the 1-1/8 x 8. IMO, it is the best chuck available.

I've the same threads for my lathe. I've several including both Vicmarcs and Oneways here, Vic is my preference as it's gearing is closed and negates the need to clean that part. It's a little heavier, but both are quite hefty.

One bit of advice though is to pick one vendor and stick with it
Smile . (personal experience, but the loss to move from the spares of one to the other would be too much of a $$ hit)

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'm seriously considering a few of them, but Michael has a good.point and my other chucks are all Nova.
Gonna need some thinking here...

Greg

I got the Axminister Evolution Chucks from Lee Valley.  I had the OneWay, Nova, and PSI golden chuck set but by far after I got the Axminister I sold the rest.
What I love about it is the square drive and it is all enclosed and stainless steel with index system on the back

    Evolution Chuck, 1-1/4" x 8tpi $255.00

2.  The O'Donnell Spigot Jaws & Inserts which I have both A & B and will do up to 6 different things also they are about 5/8" thick at the base for good stable base.

3. I also have both A & B on these Jaws as well

and again the wide thick base to keep from bending outwards.

4. Last for other big dovetails I have this one

I am so glad I have them and will use no other anymore and the jaws are very easy and quick to replace with the Allan head screws.
Last it has the set screw on it to lock into place but I have never needed to use it that way since it stays were it belongs even with all my reversing I do but does have the ability.

Thanks Arlin, but they don't carry it in 1 1/8" thread. Other sure if another make adapter is wise...

Hurricane Chucks are available with 1 1/8" inserts from thewoodturningstore.com
I have purchased 2- HTC100's and 1- HTC125 and happy with the performance.

Sorry buddy I seen 1 1/8 but did not register.  I do know that adapters are made for it or a machine shop can make them for sure and I will try to find an adapter since they are good for faceplates and other things to adapt for other things.

Is it one of these?

I have 5 adapters that go use my 1 1/4" - 8 to 1"- 8 so I can use all the cheaper faceplates I had from 3" to 6" and glad I have them to.
