Small bench top jointer? - overland - 07-29-2019

I'm interested in a small bench-top jointer. I wonder if anyone has any advice as to what kind I should look for? I have an old 8" craftsman table saw that I can pull out of storage when I have the need. (I store the motor and saw separately, so it's not too heavy for me to lift.) It's small and not that powerful but it can be extremely useful. That's the kind of jointer I'm looking for. Is there such a thing?

there has been some buzz around this one, I didn't pay much attention as i don't need one but some research might shed some light on it:

I would look on Craigslist or your local Facebook virtual garage sale, or even letgo or my offers.  You should find one between $40 to $75.  Search for joiner and jointer, since many ads misspell it.   BTW ,  I had one of the small ones years ago, the major disadvantage is usually the outfeed table is not adjustable, so you have to set the knives the right height .  On jointers with adjustable outfeed, you set the blades all the same height, and if they are  .002 high, or low, no problem, you just adjust the outfeed.  With the fixed outfeed, you basically have to get it right on the money, or you will have trouble getting the jointer to cut a straight edge .

I’m not familiar with the bench tops of today, but I had a 4” Delta from way back that worked really well. Came with the motor and all for about $40. As was said, look for one that is complete with movable in feed and out feed. That makes setup a bit easier. Sometimes you can get an old 6” for the price of one of the new 4” setups. Good luck hunting.

I have the Porter Cable 6” but I’ve been thinking of getting the Cutech 8”.

The Porter Cable is decent. Easy to tuck away.

Thank you, everybody, for all the good suggestions. I may try to hunt down an old one--to match the rest of my equipment!--but it looks like there are some good options among new machines also.

I had a 6" Delta years ago.  It was nice.  Loud and small would be the only digs.

I've also looked at the Cuttech 8".  Nice.  I have a 6' cast iron now so no hurry.

Zero problems owning one again someday if it suited my needs.

I had one of those small 4" table top as my first jointer.  They work pretty well but of course you are limited to the length of board you can straighten.  If you do 4' and less boards then you are good to go for edging.  Of course you can only face joint 4" boards.  The used market is a pretty good idea IMO.
