Threaded Inserts for Beer Tap Handles - crokett™ - 10-11-2019
Is there any reason that something like this would not work?

I would epoxy them in. I'm looking for an alternative to the brass screw-in inserts for wood. The wood ones are not designed to screw into end grain so the threads are very large.

Have only used these and they worked well no complaints in over ten years. Turned my handles out of hardwood wood & acrylic blanks.

I too used epoxy glue on some and some not. May have drilled some blanks tad deeper than 5/8”’s. I used that big butt Craftsman screw driver that came with assorted size set with no problems.
Would worry about those McMasterr-Carr inserts not holding but at that price would give em a try! Might just make life easier!

That is similar to what I use now, except I get mine from Lowes. Maybe I need to drill a larger diameter hole.

With inserts I have had best luck inserting them chucking up a piece of all-thread in the DP and double nutting the insert so it stays still. Then just turn the chuck by hand.

I was thinking about that with a cut off bolt. I already use a bolt that is chucked into the lathe with a #2 drill chuck to hold the piece for turning. Instead of installing the insert first, thread the insert onto the bolt. Get the wood centered and aligned and use the tailstock to keep it centered and turn the wood onto the insert by hand.
