Template material - RJT123 - 04-29-2020
Starting some Adirondack chairs. Lee Valley Veritas plans. What is an acceptable template material? I will be using the router table with flush trim bit after roughing out the 3/4" stock. Probably only make 4-6 this year, but ya never know.

I like 1/4" and 1/2" MDF. If I want extended life out of them it is easy to put a bit of glue-size or shellac along the business edge. I shellac the fcaes too if I will be using double sided tape versus a clamping carrier.

Nice touch on the shellac on the faces of the mdf. Hadn't thought of that. I will be using double sided carpet tape.

It's hard to beat the MDF, either 1/4 or 1/2" thick. But you might find the carpet tape a little to sticky, it may peel pieces of the MDF off..and might even pull some fibers from your stock.

Well, I use one made by 3M called double coated 410 tape. But you could also try this trick explained by Spagnoulo. Please note, there are a lot of carpet available, and the one I used ( Duck brand) was overly aggressive, but maybe not all of them are. Turners use a lot of double coated tape and Lee Valley offers this one (free shipping, no minimum right now). But if you have some carpet tape on hand try it first and see how it works.

you won't get the MDF off cleanly. Or at least I never could. That carpet tape is good stuff. I always use a few dabs of hot glue. That'll hold the templates in place, and you can slide a putty knife under the get them loose.

I use hardboard. And glue gun. Shiny side of the hardboard to the stock, little dabs of glue on the edges(easy to cut off and scrape off).

I used hardboard and turner’s double sided tape for the first set. When I learned I was making 5 more sets, I used the hardboard to make 1/2” MDF and I definitely preferred the MDF.

Sometimes a well placed screw can hold it to the template. Put it through the template, into the wood piece, say on the ends if it has tenon's
