RE: Next Project? - bandit571 - 09-12-2020

From my late dad's tool box...
[attachment=29553]
Owatonna Tool Co. # 400-4
[attachment=29554]

As for that FORD box of taps.....90% are new, never used.
[attachment=29555]
Those two large ones?  7/8 "  , both a coarse, and a Fine thread..by Greenfield.  So, I guess these aren't the "cheapies"?

I could go look up a few prices for you...if you want...

RE: Next Project? - bandit571 - 09-16-2020

Ok...back to a Build-a-Box Project.....I now have five boards for the shop....1/2" x 5-1/2" x 24" Poplar.....would have bought a few more..but I simply bought the best of the stack....

Have to layout what size box to build, to hold ALL the taps, dies, wrenches.....And then also work up a box for the Pipe thread stuff...After I sort through all the taps, and just pick out the better ones, and stash the duplicates.....toss the "bad" ones out.....there MIGHT be a Metric tap in the pile, maybe 2?    Had a few from an 80-20 build a few years back...

May have to go back to Lowes....need a chunk of 2x stock....so I can drill all the holes to hold the taps...upright.....

RE: Next Project? - bandit571 - 09-18-2020

2 x2 x 36" Poplar stick, and 2 more 1/2" x 5-1/2" x 24" are now sitting here....Figure I can cut the 2 x 2 into 3 sections, with a few gaps inbetween....and see about a way to store this dirty dozen...
Winkgrin
[attachment=29655]
The "before"....
Rolleyes
[attachment=29656]
Then after a sorting and inventory was done...the "Bigs"?
[attachment=29657]
And...the smalls..
Rolleyes
[attachment=29658]
Kick out the duplicates...and ones I can't read the labels/sizes on...
[attachment=29659]
These will get boxed up and sent to a friend of mine...which left..
Confused
[attachment=29660]
The 2 smallest ones, will only fit 2 wrenches...
No
[attachment=29661]
A No. 6 and a No. 10....will leave these set up like this, and store in the small tool Tool Chest drawer..
The other wrench will only fit up to these sizes..not the bigger ones..
No
[attachment=29662]
May have to find a bigger wrench, someday....
Rolleyes

Need to start cutting some planks down, cut some through dovetails at the corners, and build a box......Lid will be a frame & panel sort of thing...not sure about doing a "dust seal" edge..yet.  As of right now, no drawer is in the plans.....yet.

Stay tuned

RE: Next Project? - bandit571 - 09-19-2020

Ok, this will be a two-parter...Hauled the Poplar to the shop..sorted through the seven planks....and found 2 of interest...
Cool
[attachment=29673]
Which left these 5....that were all supposed to be 24" long
Rolleyes
[attachment=29674]
Yeah...right.   The 2 x 2 x 3'
[attachment=29675]
Needed to be cut down into 3 equal pieces...so..Mitersaw to cut  a few pieces..
[attachment=29676]
Then gang all three up, and trim so they matched each other...
[attachment=29677]
then set things up....to see how big a box I'll be making...
Rolleyes
[attachment=29678]
These three will be tap holders, I'll fill the spaces inbetween for the dies, and wrenches...which means I need to cut two sides, and 2 ends..
[attachment=29679]
Had to allow for 1/2" on each end....Then laid out a few toys to do dovetails with...
[attachment=29680]
Had a few others show up, once I started in...like maybe a second saw?
Confused
[attachment=29681]
As the No. 4 was having a bit of trouble starting in some places...so the No. 68 took over...
Cool

Stay tuned for Part 2

RE: Next Project? - bandit571 - 09-19-2020

Ok, had to make sure I had something to drink while getting the workout...
Rolleyes
[attachment=29682]
Yes, it IS sugar free.   Laid out a few ..pins...as I do pins first...
Winkgrin
[attachment=29683]
Then drop this down low in the vise, and get my "Joinery Stool" ready..
Winkgrin
[attachment=29684]
Then those 2 saws had a go at it..
[attachment=29685]
Had a bright spotlight going on...so I could see what I was doing better...then set up to do a bit of chopping...
[attachment=29686]
Chop about 1/2 way down, then flip over, and complete the chop.  Clean things up a bit, use these Pins to mark out the tails....bandsaw to make a bunch of cuts, all in the waste side of the lines...I had a Pine scrap sitting on the bench, where I clamped the parts down to....saves the bench's top from chisels...
Then a dry fit..
Uhoh
[attachment=29687]
Then rinse and repeat...
[attachment=29688]
About this time, I already had 3 hours in the shop...including having to haul the trash can and dust scooper to the shop, sweep the floor of the shop..
No
[attachment=29689]
"Clean up!  Aisle No.1!"
Upset

Area right between my shoulder blades was making things hard to move..
No ...let alone work...decided I had had enough fun for one day....always tomorrow..
Winkgrin

Stay tuned..

RE: Next Project? - bandit571 - 09-20-2020

Another day, another 3 hour "grind" in the shop...
Transferred markings ..
[attachment=29726]
Saw  the pins...using the Anti-rack Vise...
[attachment=29727]
Chop out the waste..
[attachment=29728]
Pins are done.  Stand pin board up onto tail board..
[attachment=29729]
Look like this once that pencil is done..
[attachment=29730]
Bandsaw to make a bunch of cuts...
[attachment=29731]
Chop the waste out...
[attachment=29732]
Test the fit....
[attachment=29733]
Rinse, repeat for the last corner...and then assemble for a dry fit...
[attachment=29734]
Then get another box out....and get ready to plough a few grooves...
[attachment=29735]
Time to get feeling "Groovy".....
Rolleyes
Stay tuned

RE: Next Project? - bandit571 - 09-21-2020

Some assembly required?
Confused    Assembled the Stanley #45 to plough some grooves..
Cool
[attachment=29740]
Set it up with the short rods, fence sitting a 1/4" away from the #12 cutter...
[attachment=29741]
All set.    need to make a jig, to hold the part long enough, and still enough..
Rolleyes
[attachment=29742]
That I can plough a 1/4" x 1/4" groove..1/4" above the bottom edge of the box...
[attachment=29743]
Even if it is against the grain....such that Poplar has....

One groove done, 3 to go.  Shop is closed today...that...Monday Thing....learned me lesson last week, to never work in the shop on a Monday.

New thermocouple for the Furnace has been bought, ready to install.....while there, I picked up a 1/4" x 24" x 24" Luann plywood panel....intend to make a couple bottom panels.

Will head back to the shop on Tuesday, when it arrives with the wind...
Winkgrin
Stay tuned

RE: Next Project? - bandit571 - 09-22-2020

Played around this morning for a bit....before the computer locked up....Hackware attack.
Upset

But, I did make a lot of noodles...
Rolleyes
[attachment=29781]
All 4 grooves to house the bottom panel are done...they even match up
Winkgrin
[attachment=29782]
Then decided to change out the #12 cutter for a #18 cutter....but also needed to change the Stanley 45 set-up a bit..
[attachment=29783]
Needed the long rods.   Goal was to plough a groove in the 2 x 2s...to house the 1/2" thick Die holder..
[attachment=29784]
Used the bench dogs, and made some wider noodles...
[attachment=29785]
I thought I had this thing centered....ah...nope..missed it by that much, Chief...turned the blank end for end, and just widen the groove a 1/16"...decided to clean the bottom of the groove a bit...
Cool
[attachment=29786]
And make sure it was flat.    Test fit..
[attachment=29787]
At least in theory...had to joint both edges of the holder...
[attachment=29788]
Still a hair too thick...we have ways..
Cool
[attachment=29789]
Then sit things down in the box...
[attachment=29790]
Going to be tight....

Stay tuned..
Winkgrin

RE: Next Project? - bandit571 - 09-23-2020

Roh-kay, Raggy....Dry fit the plywood bottom to the box...
Winkgrin
[attachment=29802]
It fit on the first try?
Confused  Hmmm...
Rolleyes  hauled some toys to the shop...needed a center finder.
[attachment=29803]
Then used the other combo square to draw a center line down the middle of the board...set a Die about where it needed to go, drilled that hole..
[attachment=29804]
Then a pair of dividers to step off the other 9 holes..
Cool
[attachment=29805]
Then drill them..
[attachment=29806]
Then fill them..
Cool
[attachment=29807]
then set this aside...and start on the racks for the taps...only difference?   Had to keep changing the sizes of the drill bits...
[attachment=29808]
Ranging for 7/8" on down the line. Got both racks drilled and filled..then set everything into the box...to make sure everything will indeed fit...
[attachment=29809]
Then, empty the box...grab a few cauls and clamps, and spread some glue...
[attachment=29810]
And, an amazing thing happened....all the corners were square?   Even the diagonals matched exactly.......

What did I do wrong
Uhoh

let the box sit overnight...and figure out something for a lid....
Confused
Stay tuned...
Winkgrin

RE: Next Project? - bandit571 - 09-23-2020

Found two planks about the same thickness....edges matched up...grain?   Maybe....Green stripe?
Confused
[attachment=29816]
Might keep it?   Or..not...?  Other side..?
Cool
[attachment=29817]
Meh....we'll see..
