Steel or aluminum "sheet metal"? It will make a difference on what type of metal that the fasteners are.

Weld a "stud" onto the blade of the hatchet. Bore a hole in the base and fasten the "stud" into the hole. The weld will be covered by the portion of the blade stuck into the base.

One 18" magnetic tool holder strip from Harbor Freight is less than $5 . . . and will hold a bunch of 1/4" hex drive bits. :winkgrin:

Is it old enough or . . . ummmm . . . less expensive enough to have "hand cut" (non-standard sized) threads? I just had the same problem with some original cast bronze door handles for the exterior...

Got one just like it hanging on the wall in my shop.  I cheated and put a bunch of carpet tacks in the "magazine".  It makes it a little easier to identify.
