Burn in sticks are fairly easy to use and will resolve your "feel" issue.

+1 for the shaper, I would try stacking 6 - 1/4" 3 or 4 wing cutters together on the spindle and run a bunch of test cuts to see how deep I could get in one pass. It kind of depends on what's in your ... |
