On a Stickley morris chair they glue mitered pieces around a center post. The leg comes up through the arm so you can see the joinery. It allows quartersawn figure on all four sides.

Thanks for the ideas guys.  I would like to use the planes I already have. I have a stanley 289 and 55,  LN 140s with fence, LN 10 1/4. And of course smoothing planes. I am hoping that will be enough.

I've got dog holes and vices on my two benches. So I can't really cover them up. For glue ups or finishing I usually put cardboard down temporarily and then throw it away after it gets saturated

Here's a list of the most used: I use the Clifton 410 and the LN 140 the most to fit machine made parts. The 140 is used on almost every panel I make and it's great going across grain with the skew....
