I built one out of all my leftover copper pipe. Works great. Others have built them out of black pipe.

Put a little bit of chalk on the cleaned taper before reassembling. That has always worked for me.

No need to remove the ballast, just wire around it. On 8' ones hot leg goes on one end and neutral goes on the other. With 4', both wires go on one end. The other end gets left bare. Check ebay....

I was getting ready to buy one until I read in another mag review that the tool turns off when at the top of the quill travel. My chuck needs to be spinning in order to change bits.

I just bought 10 LED  8' tubes from somebody in San Jose on eBay for $82 shipped. On top of that my utility company gave me $3.50 ea for replacing the neon ones that were there.

You can always check ebay. There is a guy (me /ssl_proxy.php?url=/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yellowcool.gif) who sells replacement totes and screws that fit Stanley planes
