I ended up sanding the wood, regluing and letting it set in a heated room.  I then inserted visible splines.  It seems to work fine now.

Just as a follow up I used the T88 epoxy, it was easy to use, and after 24  hours I removed the clamp.  Soon after I sanded off the excess.  It's good to know about this product. Jay

I glue and clamp in my cold garage, then move it to my heated basement to set.  Am I the only one that does not let the glue set in the cold?

I would do option 2.  If for no other reason the edge grain will be smoother on the kids legs then the end grain.  1/4 inch overhang is not a big deal although a 1/2 inch overhang will look better. ...

I finished a few walnut pieces almost 30 years ago and a few months ago I realized the finish was fading.  I added another coat of tung oil (100% tung oil) and they look great.
