Never seen a brass hand plane before. Although I am not familiar with the AMT brand. I have seen the bronze from Lee Valley and the like.

I like to use a soft wire wheel on my angle grinder for that sort of thing. You just have to watch out for flying wires when you do it.

I've seen a few with the linear bearings and bars and they seemed the best way to go for a self build. I'm not sure how much cheaper it will be over buying though.   Maybe you could find one of those...
