Funny, I just brought home a 1981 Rockwell 12-14 today that has a Biesemeyer T-square blade guard assembly stuck to it.

Depends a lot on what you want to make. If you want to make people sized furniture, the kit is almost never-ending. If you want to make small boxes or cutting boards, it's much much smaller.

I do not sand unless I am staining. Shellac right off the plane or scraper if it's gnarly.  If I'm staining I work up to 320. 600 seems excessive.
