Post: RE: Turning Green Punky Wood

Since you are just rough turning now I would wait until dry enough for the final turning to address the problem. I find this just as good (or better) than the Minwax at 2X the price. You may still n...

If you buy on Amazon they have most every size and with prime.  Note the letters are upright in most of the pictures.  There are many places that sell them other than Amazon but you may not get free s...

Post: RE: Nova chuck doesn't spin true

Looks like my link isn't working. If you stand the insert on end with threaded part down the letter (L, D, Ect) should be upright. If it is laying on its side it is not a Nova. If it is black and t...

Post: RE: Nova chuck doesn't spin true

When you check your insert note how the letter (indicates size) is stamped. If it is standing up like the "L" on the right it is most likely an oem Nova. If it is laying on its side like the one on ...

Post: RE: Nova chuck doesn't spin true

Since it has been 3 years you may not remember but did the insert come in a small Teknatool box?  If not it is probably a bogus which Woodcraft was/is known for. Do you have the 1/8" run out with a 1...

Post: RE: Electrical Woodburning On a Bowl

I made one but haven't used it much.  I made mine with clamps instead of probes and I think that is my largest problem.  I now have some heavy copper rod but have been lazy. Look for neon transform...

I would prefer a spindle gouge for coves even though a bowl gouge may work. Thompson makes quality tools and I would suggest the Detail Gouge (38D).  He also makes a standard spindle gouge and a shal...

I like to turn popular (tulip popular), not much in grain but turns easy an takes texturing well. Here tulip popular is very different from magnolias (which is also called Bay Tree). Probably lots o...

Shortly after I started turning I printed out SSSSS in about 40 point and tapped it to the headstock. Speed - Appropriate to what you are going to turn. Secruity -  Head stocked locked (mine rotat...

I think the Yorkshire has larger grit particles than the EEE allowing you to start using it much sooner.  From what I have heard, the grit breaks down finer and finer.  With the Yorkshire you may star...

   That doesn't look at all like Jimmy Clewes.  Of course for Jimmy the speed drops down to 3000 only for bowls over 14" diameter.

To go along with robo, the is another video by Stuart Batty (Alan's son).  Although he is using the SRG the same would occur with a skew. Assuming the block is 6" long the first cut was about 2" a sec...

For me it depends on the diameter.  For most of my spindle work (2" diameter) it is around the 2100 mark.  A 2" spindle at 2100 has less wood coming past the edge than a 10" bowl at 500 rpm.  I seldom...

A possibility.  Quilted maple, quartersawn?  The pattern reminds me a little of quartersawn oak.

Looks good.  I may have to try that. Are they just friction fit like the PSI "jam chuck"? I had thought of using canning rings and epoxy them in.  You would still see most of the wood on the inside.
