The no1 wasn't a 'kid's plane' or a salesman's sample. It's the smallest  of the line of double iron bailey pattern bench planes and was intended for professional use.

I don't use it a lot but when I do I'm very happy to have it. It's smaller than most block planes, but it has a chipbreaker, which makes it useful as a smoother.

My factory made jointery bench has a beech top. My main bench has a sheet of 3/4" mdf topped with a sheet of white melamine.

#5's are cheap.... #3's, not so much so. You should be able to get 2 or 3 #5's for your #3.
