We do use Vaseline when assembling an engine, but it lubes just long enough for the oil to take it's place and dissolve it.

I'm sure they would work fine for squeaks on hinges and other things you can think of.

Me too, and also pack the oil pump gears with it to assure quick priming on first start.

as for general purpose oil can use:  ATF of whatever type is handy.  Flows well at all temps, seeps into crevices quickly and is a great lube.  If you've ever been into a trans you know how clean they are and how little wear bushing seem to accumulate.
