Hello All! I hope everyone is having a good day. Does anyone make a good, wooden coffin smoother anymore?

I have been tempted by a "new old stock" batch on 'the auction site'.   Search terms, Nooitgedagt ,  Holland, New in Box.

Let us know what you end up doing

These guys have a good reputation. Never used one of their planes, but I've heard good things about them.

Mr. Knight, why did you get out of the plane making business?

That was Steve Knight.

I own one of their smoothers. Worth every penny.

One thing is for certain though. Whichever method you use, you can be absolutely certain that you are most assuredly doing it wrong.        Axehandle, 2/24/2016

I don't have one of his planes, so I can't tell you much. Steve Voigt makes double iron planes:

Coffin planes are fairly basic.
With your skills, you can surely make a good one yourself.

I've never made a plane. Steve Knight (no relation) was the plane guru and he made very nice ones. He posted his reasons for getting out of the business a while back. I don't recall the details, but I think he was swamped with work and found it difficult to make enough $$ from it to continue. I may be wrong. He posts here occasionally. Maybe he'll chime in and clarify my explanation.

Steve Knight made excellent planes for the price. I have one. But he had the worlds worst business model. He was chronically low on funds, and would offer his planes at a big discount .... and then everyone on this forum would order a couple ... which would leave him overwhelmed and unable to make anything other than discounted planes. By the time he was up to date, he needed cash, and the cycle would begin again. He could not go on like this, and eventually started a CNC business.

If I was in the market for a woodie, I'd either get one from Steve Voigt or HNT Gordon. Steve makes the best double ironed wooden planes, while Terry Gordon makes the best high angled planes.
