Recommendations for a "Quite" (as possible) Shop Vac
#11
In my on-going downsizing "saga", I'm selling my dust collector and willing to make due with a shop vac. While I have a great Fein Turbo II, it's small hose isn't conducive to the higher volume of sawdust from table saw, router or band saw---so figure I should get a vac with a 2 1/2" hose.

I see Rigid and Craftsman get good ratings on their shop vacs. Anyone know how noisy they are or know of a place that rates noise levels of vacs.

Thanks
Dave

You might want to look at Bosch. They are quieter but get ready to get your checkbook out, they aren't cheap.

The other option might be to build an enclosure to muffle the noise a bit. Ridgid sells a muffler for their shop vacs but it isn't very good, they're still LOUD.

Why don't you just get a Fein 2 1/2" hose for your Turbo II? I have both sizes of hose (and a T II) , and they interchange perfectly.
I started with absolutely nothing. Now, thanks to years of hard work, careful planning, and perseverance, I find I still have most of it left.

Your Fein pulls more air than a typical shop vac. Same goes for Festool, which is also very quiet. If you want to be more efficient in dust extraction, get a Dust Deputy.

There are two of the ridgid vacs that are quieter than the typical shop vac. They use a different motor, not sure what's different though.

Unfortunately I have found that most all vacs unless you ge the big ones all come with that tiny hose. Those small diameter hoses are cheaper to make so that's what they put in there now. Problem is they plug up when vacuuming anything.
I want the big monster vac the chimney cleaner had years ago. 3" hose and lots of suction. Had an induction motor too so it wasn't as loud. Basically like a cross between a vac and a dc high flow and high suction.

Dave -- I have a Fein Turbo I vacuum and this what I use. It works really well.

http://www.lowes.com/pd_71994-20097-9050...3&pl=1 -- If you buy the 10-foot Shop-Vac replacement hose, it will have a swivel cuff on one end. This swivel cuff requires a wrap of tape to fit the wye below.

http://feintools-online.com/fe-921086aa1...h-cap.html -- The Shop-Vac hose fits perfectly in both sides of this wye.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004R...18T6KH298X0QD4D -- If you have two Shop-Vac hoses you want to connect, this is the coupling to use. Lowes has it for about $6.00 as part of a set.

Shop vacuums which have a 4-inch hose are available. I've seen them advertised in the US, but I'm not sure if it was the Draper vac or some other brand.

a dust deputy will hook right up to your Fein vac as will just about any hose you pick up. I have a festool hose plugged into mine now but an off the shelf rigid hose fits it just as well. Now if you are just looking to buy a new tool...

Here is a pretty good review of noise levels. My brother has the Ridgid WD1450 with "noise-reduction technology." I've used it a few times and it is fairly quiet. I tried out the Craftsman XSP at the store, and it was a little noisier than the Ridgid, but not bad.

Soon as I saw that draper name it rang a bell... I'm planning on ditching my shop vacs in the shop and going with a house vac and plumb it with 2" pvc. Nice addition to the big dc.
Got too many shop vacs in the house and shop but hate to get rid of them cause they are still like new. Family members always think I need a new shop vac for some reason.
