this is being asked for a fellow scroller. he did this cutting

absolutely beautiful work! now he wants to put a finish on it but doesnt want the wood to darken. is there a product or process that will do that?

Crystalac or any of the GF except for EnduroVar are waterborne finishes and do not change the color at all. EnduroVar is designed to mimic the yellowing of a traditional finish. If he wants to look at it he could try a 1# cut coat of Garnet shellac on scrap and see if he likes it. Otherwise the quality waterborne are just fine. They are easy to apply with a rag, foam brush and spray very easily.

No matter what he puts on it it will look a lot darker than it does now. Even an absolutely water clear finish, like those JR1 mentioned, will make it look a lot darker. Better IMO, but also darker.

Just wipe it with alcohol or mineral spirits and you will see what I mean.
