Dylos measurements?
#4
What have others' experiences been with the Dylos?
I got a DC1100pro recently and have been leaving it running in my garage shop.
I last did woodworking a week ago, and have been out of the house for the last 4 days.

If I review the last 24 hours of history, I see much more variation than I'd expect, as there was no activity in the garage (or house).

Do others seem this type of variation too?

Something is stirring up the dust in your shop when you're not there. Forced air heat? Leaky garage door? Pets running around?

For comparison:

In my basement shop the forced-air HVAC ducts are in the ceiling. Even when the shop is unoccupied, air movement keeps the DYLOS at 200-300 (large particles).

If I enter the shop and simply walk around busying myself with non-woodworking tasks, the particle count rises to the 1000's if the floor was recently vacuumed and into the 2000's if it hasn't been.

I only see the large particle count go above 3000 when operating machinery.

Where is the Dylos unit located relative to the overhead door? How's the seal on that door? Outside of a phantom, you're probably seeing some outdoor air pushed into your garage. Clean the detector and seal it in a small box for a few days to confirm the particle counter is stable.

My unit is in the basement and is rock solid, running for the last 5+ years. I can definitely tell when the HVAC cycles. I clean the unit when I think of it but use the data to tell me when the air is getting crapped up (small particle count spikes) and I need to exit for a few minutes. The PC app runs on my shop computer and I always have it maximized on its own monitor. I use two Jet air scrubbers that typically run when I'm doing anything in the shop so the dirty air is knocked down quickly. My basement shop has the cleanest air in the house...mostly.
