Fence Attachment for Veritas Large Router Plane

[ Note: Posting photos seems to be on shifting sands with the new WN software.  Sometimes I see them, later not, then sometimes they come back.  This one is from Photobucket using the straight "HTML Embed" link.  For me the image is visible in "Preview" but not in "Edit".  In "Edit" I see only the text link to Photobucket.]

The Veritas Large Router Plane with revised depth stop is very close to a perfect tool in my view.  It’s versatile, precise, intuitive and fun to use.  However, I’ve found it useful to change to a more convenient attachment screw for the fence, a thumb screw that allows secure installation and easy removal of the fence without a tool.  I find I change the fence often  (off-on and side-to-side), and this makes it relatively painless.

Originally, the plane came with a slotted pan-head screw for this.  I found that annoying to install - too many items to juggle, too many degrees of freedom, not enough hands, not enough dexterity, not enough head to grab onto and never the right screwdriver.  I soon switched to a socket-head cap screw.  That one I could at least snug down by turning the knurled cap with my fingers, but still needed a hex key to fully tighten.

Eventually, I found a suitable brass thumb screw at Amazon, of all places.  I think the price at the time for a pack of 5 screws was about $12, which I choked on.  While I dithered, the price went to $15.  Eventually, the annoyance of needing a tool to change the fence won out.  It may not be the best $15 I’ve ever spent, but it’s right up there, shop-wise, at least.  Even at the current $21 for 5 thumb screws, I’d buy it and then find some other valuable uses for the 4 extras.

I’ve used this thumb screw for a couple years now.  The fence has been secure, and I've been very happy with it.

It’s a 10-32 x 1/2”, fully threaded to a 3/8” diameter shoulder, with a 1/2” diameter knurled head, but it’s probably a good idea to verify thread size on your own OEM screw before you buy.  The shoulder is important.

Other sources I found required buying way too many or had high shipping cost.  Similar steel thumb screws appear also to be available from same place at about the same price.  The Website says made in USA.

It's a bit pricey, but if you use the fence a lot on your Veritas Large Router Plane, this will improve your life in some small way.  If you don’t use the fence much, this might encourage more use (and thereby improve your life in some small way
Wink ).

I would send you $6 for one of those screws shipped. Would that not cover your costs? I imagine the other three would sell here as well.
Better, wait until you get 4 orders and make one trip to the PO.
