Which plywood?

For painted - birch/maple MDF core.  The outside is much flatter than veneer core and harder than MDF only.  Do paint all sides.

MDF is not a great choice for possible future water leaks. Get plywood with the smoothest finish layer. That makes painting easier. Prime and coat both sides, as was said.
