Cherry scraps, Project start up
#21
Clamps came off this morning
Yes

Had to plane the edges of a Poplar panel...

Was a tad too wide...we have ways...
Winkgrin

Stanley #4 was taking too thin of a shaving...took awhile...

Also needed to use the plane on the end grain, to correct a wavy edge....

Finally got the bottom to fit down on the cleats  I had glued on last night..

Height looks about right.

Went to a friend's place, today.   Traded a couple items for a stick of Black Walnut..1 x 4 x 7'
Winkgrin
Will use it to build the lid with.....stay tuned
Cool

Camera battery is charged up....
Uhoh

Mitre box saw to cut three pieces, jointed the edges, and clamped up into a blank.    Will be a raised panel for the lid....

This was ripped down the center, then clamped into the vise..

Edges were jointed til they matched.

These two were sawn  down to make a pair of short rails, to go with the Long rails already done.   made sure the edges were smooth..

Letting the panel sit overnight.    Maybe tomorrow, I can turn it into a raised panel.   Need to drag the Stanley 45  back out, to plough grooves in the rails, to house the raised panel.

Had run out of Cherry, so walnut will just have to do.
Rolleyes ....stay tuned...

Panel is out of the clamps, and planed flat..

Bevels were made on the end grain first..

Then the long grain was beveled, until a nice sharp corner appeared...

Adjusted the jig, to allow the Stanley 45 to make a groove to house the raised panel in

Then  made a few tenons.    Fought with a bunch of  clamps and cauls...
Upsettoo many parts, not enough hands.

Each corner has a pair of cauls, to keep the corners flat.   It also keeps the clamps from dinging the surface.

Will let this mess sit up overnight.   Will try to find some hinges tomorrow.....
MIGHT try to cobble a tray to sit inside the box?    Ends of the lid are about flush with the ends on the box,  may add a curve to the "front" edge of the lid...for a finger rest underneath the lid?

Nothing has been written down on paper, in the way of a "Plan"..has all been laid out inside my head...."Single Brain Cell Sketch Up"  seems to do good work?
Confused

Lid id out of the clamps......trimmed things a bit..

Was a bit too wide....trimmed a bit off the front and back.   Left a tab out front for a finger rest, to lift the lid with...

Needs a lot of work yet.   I did manage to buy some brass hinges today..
Rolleyes

Monday is usually when the shop is closed.....maybe tomorrow, I can get a bit of work done?

Stay tuned..

Looking nice! Have always liked walnut. Those rails sized differently from the stiles in the lid would drive me nuts, however.

Tried to make a couple trays.....cancelled that
No they weren't working out the way I wanted them to
Upset

Closed the lid..
Yes

And added a coat of Clear Gloss Poly on top of two coats of amber shellac..

Sooo, this project is completed..
Winkgrin

Which means I need to clear off the bench, and decide what to build next
Confused

Have a panel, someone else had made..

Supposed to be Maple.   Then there is a stack of these boards

Most are under 2' long.  Lots of 1 x 8 and 1 x 6s  just cut-offs
Rolleyes

This one is 5/4....had a split that finally cracked all the way through.....may rip the rest into stiles?

Then this "square" panel....almost screams "Drawer front"  ?
Confused

Will take a few days "off" to recharge the brain cells.....and see what I can cobble up next.

Stay tuned...

Your box came out very nice. Thanks for sharing the build.

Have you a recipient/customer? Purpose? I couldn't find mention. The impression I get is it was purely free creation. Nice one, too.
