Help for a newbie

it would be nice to have a mentor to show the nuts and bolts to turning. Video's are good also. I learned to turn before there was internet, you tube and the nearest turning club was one and a half states away, Chicago.  

Self taught is still a great way to learn the in's and out's. I made my share of mistakes but I learned from them. Watching video or someone else isn't the  same as hands on. Go make some dust and learn.

Find and join a local Woodturning club... They love to help and teach
Slow Dancing..... doing vertically what you're wanting to do horizontally
