File holders

I am finishing up with 18 weeks of student teaching and I wanted to do something nice for my cooperating teacher. She has been a fantastic mentor. She uses some rickety old plastic file holders for incoming and graded assignments that I was thinking of replacing. 

   

I've browsed through google images and found a couple of designs that are appealing but I always like to fish around here for some design ideas before I get started on a project. I know there are lots of different possibilites, but I'm looking for something light and airy ( if that makes sense?). It doesn't have to be stackable. I was thinking of doing 2 of them 5 or 6 shelves high. I was thinking about something like this but a little fancier and with joinery, not screws.

Slab sides and back with shelf pins for the horizontal shelves.  A half moon shape on the ends of the shelves to make grabbing the papers easier.

This is an example of what I'm not looking to do. It's simple and effective and would do the job for years, but I'm looking to do something more decorative.

It looks like it was done on a CNC. It's pretty cool.
