Just clean the wood with MS and then wax; remove paint from outside cheeks and don't repaint, just clean japanning and wax it on the inside, don't gild a lilly. Looks in pretty good shape, sharpness of the iron is also important. Oh, and the lever cap is likely not correct (its T11), but it will be just fine. You have a very nice friend to gift it to you.
