I mounted the bucket and vortex top above the shop vac and it works. I got the idea from a YouTube video - https://youtu.be/lGnGNYrxqjs. If the link doesn’t work, just search “shop vac dust collection” and it will come up.

I did this... Works great, no loss of suction from extra hose runs or whatever. Basically it's a mini 2-stage cyclone, except the filter is before the blower. Only down side is it takes some doing to return it to normal shop vac mode, so if you have reason to use it on wet stuff occasionally, might not be a good idea. It's also top heavy, and everyone knows shop vacs can't even roll over their own cord...

The upside is I can fit 12 actual gallons of crap in my 12 gallon shop vac. Before, the filter almost touched the bottom of the bin, so it filled up fast. It's tricky to get a good seal around the filter, and loud if there's a leak. But it's worked great for ... about a decade now I think.
