I have and use both. My 12" shellix is great for overall work. But I would never give up my old lunch box. I use on a small detail work.

Are you concern about splitting? Cross banding would prevent it like plywood. The glue lines IMO help prevent it. I don't see a benefit to it.

I made the same one. I used Elm and Maple. Used quarter sawn for the top. Always concern the top would wrap or bow.
