Pros and cons of Byrd head on J/P
Posted by: jteneyck - 09-10-2016, 10:54 PM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (39)

I may have a chance to buy a new Byrd head for my MiniMax J/P at a nice discount. A helical head makes all kinds of sense on a planer, but I've read some people think they are not a good option on a jointer. What say you all?

I'm getting tired of dealing with the little knicks I keep getting in my straight knives .

Wink I am back
Posted by: Del Hilburn - 09-10-2016, 08:30 PM - Forum: Woodworking - Replies (8)

Hi everyone

I took off some time to recover from my Heart Attack & Quad Bypass Surgery
It has taken me nine months to recover to the point I feel I can continue on with my woodworking

So here is my first real project to start off with

I decided to build a Miter Sled for my table saw
I have always wanted one but never set down to build one

After looking at what others built, I decided to design and build my own version
and try to incorporate as many of the features that I could

So here is the big reveal

I think I figured out what was wrong with the pictures

  Solid core door
Posted by: Scouter - 09-10-2016, 06:18 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (10)

When a company says "solid core door" I am assuming that the core is not wood, at least not the wood that the exterior is made from.

Does anyone know what the "solid core" is?

Can the door be cut down and still hold together, or will the outside layers peel away?

  Olive wood
Posted by: KlausK. - 09-10-2016, 03:30 PM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - Replies (8)

After some longer time I was lucky enough to work Olive again. Just a fantastic wood. It's easy to work and smells incredibly well while working it. It's always a surprising thing to see the figure of the wood on the handle top after it was bandsawed.

  Utility Sink Pump
Posted by: Rick_B - 09-10-2016, 02:44 PM - Forum: Home Improvement - Replies (7)

Good afternoon folks - I would like to install a utility sink in my basement shop.  Unfortunately the drain lines are all above the basement floor which will require some form of pump to get the sink drain up to the main sewer line.  I've got several options for location, however all but one will require a pump with 9' of lift.  I'm wondering if this is within the capabilities of these pumps?

Secondly - I've looked at a couple of pumps which indicate that no traps or vents are required - this would make locating the sink a whole lot easier but I'm wondering if I truly understand what they are saying - this type of pump would allow a sink install without venting?

Finally - any thoughts on make, model, specs (like horse power) would be appreciated

Thanks for any help you can offer

Rick

This is the last of this particular stuff. I have around 400 pieces available. It is dry check free material. 20 years of dust and oxidation, No charge for that
Big Grin. This material is suited for handles, knobs, plugs, inlays, or small turnings. They measure 1 1/4" square x 3 1/2". $35 shipped for 8 pieces. Prefer Paypal. If you need more than that, they are $3.50 each plus shipping.

The piece on the left was touched to the sander.

  Delta 36-725 Miter Gauge
Posted by: LongLook - 09-10-2016, 09:51 AM - Forum: Woodworking Power Tools - Replies (6)

I bought this saw last fall due to downsizing my home (and my shop) and overall it has been a pretty good unit.  However I noticed the miter gauge wasn't quite square to the blade and I have attempted to adjust it by loosening the three screws on the bottom, bringing it to square with the bar and retightening the screws.  However it seems to pull everything back into mis-alignment when I tighten those screws.  Am I missing something here or should I just bite the bullet and buy an after market gauge?

CRAFTS of NJ Tailgating Sunday the 11th
Posted by: Admiral - 09-10-2016, 09:33 AM - Forum: Woodworking Hand Tools - No Replies

Just a reminder to those local to NJ, tomorrow the 11th is the CRAFTS of NJ "picnic" which is preceded by a really decent tailgating event where club members set up and sell tools. Again, think a flea market with nothing but tool vendors, sort of like MWTCA meets (which don't happen at all in NJ).  Here's the link with directions, easy to get to off of I-78 at mile marker 26.  If you've got the time, worth attending.

http://www.craftsofnj.org/index.php/crafts-picnic

Early on I'll be fondling everyone else's tools, pretty much if you're looking for something in particular, its likely to be there.  Later I'll set up at the back of my green and somewhat battered Tundra, likely bring some saws and whatever else of interest I scour up this afternoon.  If you're there, stop and say howdy.
